Living while black with adhd

Being Is The New Black

9/23/2021

Most people who have ADHD have the desire to harness productivity, to be more efficient and effective.

How do we do these things? The short answer is this: we are human beings, not human doings.

And I can guarantee that you are already doing more than enough.

Simply being who you are is a radical act not only because you are Black but because who you are as a human being cannot be reproduced. There is only one of you and only so much you can do today.

Giving others the gift of yourself just by being yourself (e.g., not doing anything additionally) allows those around you to slow down with you.  The more we slow down to replenish and recharge, the more time and energy we will have to "be productive."

Slowing down and pausing are Jedi mind tricks for Black folks who have ADHD. The impulse to pile on more tasks, to say yes to more things, to “just do this one last thing” are all a dead end and a recipe for stress, self-loathing, despair and disconnection.

The opposite is true.  Pausing, slowing down, saying "no" more often and doing less are all ways to organically set boundaries. The more boundaries we set the more time, energy and productivity we will reclaim.

Today, allow yourself to just be...and see what happens.
